MATERIALOGRAPHY
Materialography is the science of examining a material’s microstructure – its internal composition at a microscopic level. By carefully grinding, polishing and analysing prepared samples, engineers and scientists gain insight into strength, corrosion behaviour, wear mechanisms and potential failure points.
Today, materialography extends beyond classical metallography to include ceramics, plastics and composite materials prepared in a similar way. KGS DIAMOND supports this work with a focused range of fixed-diamond discs designed for efficient, controlled sample preparation. Our goal is to help laboratories prepare flat, scratch-controlled surfaces with consistent results from specimen to specimen.
Unlocking material Performance
Understanding microstructure is key to improving material performance. KGS materialography discs support the preparation of samples used to assess strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and reliability in metals, ceramics, plastics and composites. By providing stable, predictable grinding and polishing behaviour, our tools contribute to clear microstructural images and reproducible laboratory results
Four-disc program for complete preparation
KGS materialography uses a compact program of four diamond discs: FLEXIS® and TELUM® in metal bond, and PROLAP and PROMET in resin bond. This combination allows laboratories to configure preparation steps from coarse grinding to fine finishing using fixed diamond abrasives rather than slurries, simplifying handling and process control.
Consistency and process efficiency
Fixed-diamond discs can support faster stock removal, stable surface flatness and consistent scratch patterns compared with many loose-abrasive systems. KGS materialography discs are designed to deliver long disc life and steady performance over numerous samples, helping laboratories reduce disc changes, limit process variation and make better use of preparation time.
Support for a growing range of materials
The KGS materialography program is being expanded with material-specific recommendations and parameters. The microsite groups information by material family – such as metals, ceramics, plastics and composites – so users can select suitable discs and sequences for their applications and request additional guidance where needed.
Applications
KGS DIAMOND materialography discs are used in laboratories that prepare samples for microstructural analysis in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, machinery, electronics and advanced materials. Typical tasks include preparing mounted or unmounted specimens for optical microscopy, image analysis, hardness testing and failure investigation.
Materials range from steels, aluminium alloys and non-ferrous metals to ceramics, hard coatings, plastics and fibre-reinforced composites. By using fixed-diamond discs across several preparation stages, laboratories can work towards consistent sample quality and repeatable surfaces that support clear, interpretable micrographs and reliable test results.

Products
KGS DIAMOND currently offers four dedicated discs in its materialography program:
KGS FLEXIS® (metal bond)
Fixed-diamond disc for robust grinding stages where high stock removal and dimensional stability are required on a range of metallic and hard materials.
KGS TELUM® (metal bond)
Metal-bond diamond disc designed for controlled grinding with good wear resistance, suitable as an intermediate step or for applications where a stable, predictable surface is important.
KGS PROLAP (resin bond)
Resin-bond diamond disc intended for finer grinding and pre-polishing, supporting the transition from coarse preparation to polishing while maintaining defined scratch patterns.
KGS PROMET (resin bond)
Resin-bond diamond disc for fine grinding and polishing towards low Ra values, used in the later stages of preparation prior to final polishing steps where required.
